Let me give you some validity to what I will present.
I am Dr. Ken Rich. I am a physician, now retired, who specialized in physical medicine / therapy and occupational rehabilitation. During the last three years, after ceasing actual practice, but before my retirement I worked full time teaching thousands of doctors and therapist and patients about pain control, muscles and specifically about Trigger Points (TPs). These courses were certified for state and federal relicensing required continuing education requirements by California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon and Hawaii (those states near home to me). Since then I have tought many free patient seminars in community settings how to manage, reduce and often eliminate their personal pain problems.
What I observed over and over again was a general lack of understanding of how the body pain system worked, how the automatic injury protective systems worked and how to deal with the pain that most patients have.
Please don't misunderstand me. Pain is a symptom usually associated with some injury or desease process and necessary to the survival of the body. BUT, all too often, it becomes a condition in and of itself that becomes self generating. Treating and even curing the original injury without treating the developing physiological pian mechanism is like treating a leaking roof without treating the associated wood rot damage that often accompanies it.
